OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST


Under the authority of the Chief of the Conferences and Cultural Events Management Section and in close collaboration with the Interpretation Coordinator, the incumbent shall:

  • Interpret, by both consecutive and simultaneous methods, at meetings of all types to which he/she is assigned, into French and English, as “A” language level, according to the definition of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), from English, French and Spanish and, if possible, from any of the other three official languages of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese and Russian);
  • As team leader, manage, co-ordinate and supervise teams of free-lance interpreters at meetings of all types, both at Headquarters and in the field; Act as team leader of all interpreters assigned to meetings of the Executive Board; Manage, co-ordinate and supervise, in collaboration with the Interpretation Coordinator, all interpreters assigned to meetings of the General Conference;
  • Establish liaison with interpreter training schools and prospect the free-lance interpreter market for competent new interpreters to add to the interpreters’ roster;
  • Provide advice and guidance to junior interpreters.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


Education

  • Advanced university degree (at Master’s level or equivalent) in language, Conference Interpretation or related field.

Work Experience
  • At least 7 years’ professional experience of conference interpretation.
Skills/Competencies
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise way.
  • Knowledge of UNESCO’s major fields of competence (Education, Science, Social and Human Sciences, Culture or Communication an Information).
  • Ability to work independently and accurately, even under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain good working relations in a multicultural environment and to work effectively in a team.
  • Broad general knowledge.
  • Good IT skills.
Languages
  • English and/or French as the principal language, with excellent command of the other language. Very good knowledge of Spanish.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Secialized training in conference interpretation.

Work Experience
  • Relevant experience in an organization of the United Nations system.
Skills/Competencies
  • Specialization in one or more of the Organization’s above mentioned fields of competence;
  • Management and organizational skills;
  • Language teaching experience.
