The primary purpose of the Communications Intern role is to support the PR, Communications and Marketing Officer with a range of communications and projects. These will include writing and uploading content for the St Luke’s website, various news items for different audiences and content for social media. The intern will also support the launch of the new initiatives and campaigns at St Luke’s. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with an interest in charity communications to play a key role in developing and supporting new and existing areas of fundraising. This is a short term role, up to 6 months. Hours and timescale can be discussed as interview.
This role is suitable for someone who has recently graduated in communications/ social media, or a degree student on a similar course seeking their middle year placement.
Skills required
We are looking for someone with the following qualities and skills:

    Good written and verbal skills
    Effective team member able to interact with a diverse team of staff and volunteers
    Good organisational and time management skills
    Excellent attention to detail and an interest in creating appropriate eye catching content
    Friendly and efficient telephone and face to face manner
    Competent user of Microsoft Office (especially Microsoft Outlook, Word and Publisher), and ease with using different internet browsers
    Desirable experience of working with Facebook pages and organisational Twitter accounts, as well as photo and image manipulation (using MS Office tools) and use of web based programs (for example, our bulk emails are sent using a web based program that links to our database)
    Willingness to learn new skills.

Main responsibilities

    Assisting with the production and fulfilment of various mailings
    Assisting with the production of fliers, letters, vouchers and posters etc. for campaigns, ensuring that brand guidelines are followed
    Writing press releases and other content for news items and websites, and contacting editors, journalists and community groups to arrange for this content to be distributed
    Helping to maintain the donor database (Raisers Edge) with data cleansing, removing duplicates, and adding in records as necessary
    Maintaining the publicity consent log and photo storage system
    Being part of the team that receives donations face to face at the hospice
    Writing and uploading content for St Luke’s website
    Uploading to (and scheduling content for) social media platforms
    Helping prepare monthly statistics relating to communication platform traffic across campaigns.

Learning Opportunities and Shadowing

    Experience of being part of a busy Income Generation team with the opportunity for induction sessions giving an overview of the hospice, event management, hospice lottery, individual giving, hospice retail, volunteering, as well as community fundraising
    Opportunity to be part of project teams working with members of the Income Generation team
    At the end of the placement the intern will have developed skills in WordPress and day to day website administration, have experience of using Sharepoint for file storage, experience of working in a busy office environment, practical experience in how to plan and organise a simple event, and experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary project teams.
